  • Charles Randy Thibeault was arrested this morning at 11:55 am for the murder of his estranged wife, Wendy D Thibeault.
    By T, Olmsted Last Edited 08/05/08 11:10pm

Randy Thibeault is charged with the following:

    * Murder in the 2nd Degree
    *Criminal weapons possession 3rd Degree
    *Burglery  1st Degree
    *Criminal Contempt 1st Degree

Thibeault was arraigned this morning and is currently being held pending $150,000.00 cash bail, or $300,000.00 bond.

During a press conference, Cortland County DA David Hartnett confirmed, that at the request of the DA's office, Charles Randy Thibeault turned himself in to the Sheriffs department earlier today.

Thibeault was indicted on multiple felony counts, including murder in the 2nd degree, for the May 26th death of his estranged wife Wendy Thibeault.

Following his arraignment, Thibeault was held in the Cortland County Correctional facility pending $150,000 cash bail or $300,000 bond.

Friends and supporters of Wendy where among those in attendance for todays conference.

District Attorney Hartnett would not be specific about what lead to todays arrest, saying that it was a result of the Grand Jury proceedings, and the "overall investigation."

During questioning by the press, Hartnett stated that Charles Randy Thibeault has never been questioned with regard to this crime. He said that on May 26th, at the request of investigators, Thibeault reported to the Sheriffs dept for questioning, and although he remained there for more than 15 hours, he was never questioned.
    Hartnett stated that Thibeault
was not interviewed because his attorney was present, and had instructed him not to answer any questions.

Members of the press, and others in attendance, were clearly frustrated as Hartnett consistantly failed to give  a satisfactory answer for why investigators made no attempt to interview Thibeault at any time during that 15 hours, or at any other time during this investigation.

When asked about the weapons charge, Hartnett stated that the charge was in connection with a weapon found in the house as part of the investigation. He did indicate that the weapon was not part of the murder investigation, but stated that Thibeault did not have a permit for it.
The DA's office did confirm that Thibeault has plead innocent to all charges. He is due back in court on July 31

    Accused Murderer out on bail
On Thursday July 31st Randy Thibeault appeared in court, where his attorneys had hoped to argue for a bail reduction.

Thibeault's attorneys, Patrick Perfetti and Emil Rossi filed a motion to reduce his bail on the premise that County Court Judge Judy Campbell abused the intent of bail when she set it at $150,000 cash or $300,000 bond during his arraignment on July 17th, an amount greater than that requested by Cortland County DA David Hartnett.
Judge Campbell scheduled a bail hearing for September 5th.

The following day, Friday August 1st, accused murderer Charles Randy Thibeault posted the $150,000 cash bail and was released.

On Monday August 4th Thibeault was back in Cortlandville Town Court on seperate charges filed as a result of the attack on Wendy Thibeault at the couples Tower Rd home. On April 14th Wendy told police that  Randy Thibeault shoved her and choked her until she lost consciousness. In the days between that attack, and the day she was found strangled to death in her home, Wendy had confided in friends and family that she feared for her life. Randy Thibeault continues to maintain his innocence to all charges. Judge Francis Casullo adjourned the Cortlandville case until Oct 6th.

Victims of domestic violence – women, men, married, single, gay, straight, young and old – all deserve the best protection the law can provide," said Governor David A. Paterson. "With this new law, many more people than ever before will be afforded the chance to live safe lives. This law is an important piece of the state's broader strategy to respond to and prevent domestic violence."

    Preventing Domestic Violence

    By Jon Dougherty

Friends of Wendy Thibeault say she was victimized by her husband, abused to the point she couldn't be helped. So they've started a website to help prevent another case like hers from happening again. JusticeforWendy.com has received national attention since its creation last month. The website raises awareness about domestic violence. Wendy Thibeault was abused by her estranged husband, Randy. Wendy was granted an order of protection against her husband in April, but friends say by that time, it was too late.

The website brings attention to current laws, and what needs to be done to protect victims, including two key bills, awaiting a vote from the U.S. Senate. One to promote the economic security and safety of victims. The other, a bill to establish a domestic violence volunteer attorney network to represent domestic violence victims.

Currently, a domestic violence task force is in the works. It will be an independent agency to help protect victims of domestic violence, working with other local agencies, identifying educational awareness, and advocacy.
